The number of people transiting Oaxaca rose rapidly in 2023-24, and the work carried out by Collin volunteers grew apace. During the months of March-April 2024, for example, Collin delivered an estimated 14,820 meals to people on the move, recharged 4,160 of their cell phones, provided individual first-aid to 260, distributed 2,860 articles of clothing, and gave out 110 much-needed blankets to fend off the cold during nights spent sleeping in the open. In June 2024, with the onset of Oaxaca’s summer rains, Collin distributed some 45 tents to provide people on the move with cover.
Collin temporarily closed its kitchen in June 2024 in response to local concerns about overcrowding in the park, but volunteers continued to help people on the move with medical care and other immediate needs in a designated space at the city tennis courts.
Acutely aware of the dangers and stress that transiting people face while sleeping in the streets and parks of Oaxaca, Collin intensified its search to find a location to establish a proper shelter.
